In 2018, DAF Trucks became the first truck manufacturer in Europe to launch an all-electric haulage truck. Since then, dozens of electric CF Electric tractors and chassis, as well as LF Electric chassis, have been put into service by leading transport operators for emission-free transport across Europe. These trucks are used to supply supermarkets, transport containers and collect waste in urban areas.

With the new generation of DAF XD Electric and XF Electric, DAF is taking electric transport to a new level. Both innovative series are based on the award-winning XD and XF models. They ensure the same unsurpassed quality, efficiency and safety combined with impressive comfort for the driver.

Modern power plants

The new DAF XD Electric and DAF XF Electric models are equipped with efficient and reliable electric drives with permanent magnets: PACCAR EX-D1 and PACCAR EX-D2, which provide power from 170 kW (230 hp) to 350 kW (480 hp).

The drives are extremely compact and consist of two separate electric motors and a central integrated three-speed transmission. Planetary gearboxes guarantee the correct selection of the gear ratio at any time. At partial load, if possible, only one of the two electric motors is activated for maximum efficiency. As soon as more power or torque is needed – for example during acceleration, hill driving or regenerative braking – the second part of the drive is activated instantly and smoothly. The compact solution with two planetary gearboxes is also much lighter than a traditional transmission. This allows you to increase the payload of the truck and provides quick and extremely comfortable gear changes.

 PACCAR EX-D1: XD Electric

The PACCAR EX-D1 drive is installed on the DAF XD Electric for single use with a gross weight of up to 29 tons. Three power options are available: 170 kW (230 hp), 220 kW (300 hp) and 270 kW (370 hp), each with a maximum torque of 1,500 N·m. The motors can be combined with two to five battery units with a total capacity of 210 to 525 kWh. PACCAR EX-D1 drives are ideal for delivering goods to stores, collecting containers and waste. The maximum regenerative braking power for all PACCAR EX-D1 drives is 270 kW.

PACCAR EX-D2: XD and XF Electric

For more demanding tasks, DAF offers the more powerful PACCAR EX-D2 electric motor. It is available in XD and XF Electric models and has power options of 270 kW (370 hp), 310 kW (420 hp) and 350 kW (480 hp). These power units provide an impressive torque of 2,400 N·m and are suitable for road trains with a gross weight of up to 50 tons. The drive is equipped with a minimum of three and a maximum of five battery units with a total capacity of 315 to 525 kWh. PACCAR EX-D2 with regenerative braking power of 350 kW is the optimal choice for heavy loads and long-distance transport.

Individual modular battery units

In order to adapt electric trucks as much as possible to customer needs, DAF offers a wide range of battery configurations, from two to five units. After all, not every customer needs a maximum emission-free range of 500 km – especially if the truck covers a short distance every day, returns to the base in the evening and can be charged there. This approach reduces the weight of the vehicle and increases the payload.

However, the configuration with five battery units allows you to cover more than 500 km without emissions on a single charge. With optimal route planning and charging, the XD and XF Electric models can practically travel up to 1,000 km per day in all-electric mode, making them suitable for long-distance transport.

The impressive range is provided by the highly efficient PACCAR EX-D1 and EX-D2 powerplants, combined with the intelligent DAF battery management system, which optimally distributes energy between the drive and other components.

The extremely aerodynamic design of the trucks also plays an important role in ensuring energy efficiency and a long range. The streamlined shape of the cabin with rounded corners, a windshield, the absence of seams and gaps between panels minimizes air resistance, which directly reduces energy consumption. Side skirts, deflectors, fairings and an aerodynamic lower panel under the cockpit also contribute to this, as do digital cameras that replace the mirrors.
