The city of Amsterdam orders 40 fully electric DAF trucks

Excellent body compatibility results in lower costs

The city of Amsterdam is purchasing 40 electric DAF XD garbage collection trucks. DAF XD Electric 6×2 FAN electric trucks will be delivered in 2026 with different body types, each designed for a specific application.

This order is part of Amsterdam’s commitment to minimize CO₂ emissions and other harmful substances. The DAF dealer Truckland will supply the vehicles, and VDL-Translift will perform part of the body work.

Convenience for body builders — XD Electric

An important factor in the decision of the city of Amsterdam to choose DAF XD Electric was the compatibility of the chassis with the body. The factory battery packs can be mounted in different places on the chassis, so body builders don’t have to move electrical components around, and there’s plenty of room to install equipment like stabilizer bars.

Choosing in favor of LFP-accumulators

Amsterdam also took into account DAF’s strategy to use batteries based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry. LFP batteries are cobalt and nickel free and have a long predicted life, making them ideal for truck use. They can be charged up to 100% repeatedly without significant impact on performance or reliability. They also have high thermal stability, which ensures their safety in such applications.

Ideal for urban areas

The DAF XD is ideal for waste collection in central areas of cities such as Amsterdam, thanks to the excellent visibility from the cab and the low entry threshold. The large windshield, low window line and standard DAF Corner View camera on the passenger side provide the driver with an unsurpassed view of vulnerable road users – children, pedestrians and cyclists. A low entrance threshold with two ergonomically positioned steps greatly facilitates access to the cabin, which can be equipped with up to three comfortable seats.

4 different body types

40 electric DAF XD Electric trucks for the city of Amsterdam will be equipped with different types of bodies: 13 rear-loading, 10 with a crane and hook-lifting mechanism, 17 front-loading for collecting containers. Thanks to this new vehicle fleet, the municipality will be able to collect almost all types of household and office waste without emissions.

3 battery packs and electric PTO

All vehicles will be equipped with three (out of a maximum possible five) LFP battery units with a capacity of 105 kWh each. They feed an electric motor with a capacity of 170 or 220 kW. The trucks will be equipped with a 90 kW electric PTO to power the equipment, including body mechanisms and loading cranes.

“Complete confidence in electric trucks”

The city of Amsterdam is looking forward to putting DAF fully electric trucks into service. These 40 DAF XD Electrics will not only help reduce the city’s carbon footprint, but also help improve air quality in the Dutch capital. Roland Heinen, director of waste and resources at the municipality of Amsterdam, said:
“We are pleased to work with the DAF Truckland dealer and are fully confident of a sustainable future with these electric waste collection trucks in Amsterdam.”
