DAF Trucks is taking the next step in the development of electric vehicles by increasing the range of the DAF CF Electric with VDL e-power technology to 200 kilometers. In addition, the release of a new generation of rechargeable batteries made it possible to reduce the total weight by 700 kg and, accordingly, increase the carrying capacity.
DAF is a leader in the development and sale of fully electric trucks. Operational tests of the first CF Electric models began already in 2018 with the participation of customers from Germany and the Netherlands. According to the results of these tests, sales of the second generation of electric cars equipped with new software and a new instrument panel were opened last year.
Traction and rigid chassis
The DAF CF Electric is ideal for operation in emission-free zones and for silent use in urban areas, including for shared delivery tasks, supermarket deliveries and waste collection. DAF currently offers the CF Electric in two versions: a 4×2 tractor unit (GCW: 37 tons) and a 6×2 chassis with a steerable support axle for maximum maneuverability (GVW: 28 tons).
Proven and reliable technology
New CF Electric cars are built on the basis of proven and reliable technologies of past generations and guarantee maximum comfort and ease of use. A useful innovation was a block of lithium-ion storage batteries with a capacity of 350 kWh. (effective capacity 315 kW/h). In particular, the increase in power, the new unit became lighter by as much as 700 kg. Such a reduction in mass was directly reflected in the increase in carrying capacity.
Battery temperature is maintained in the range of 25 to 40 degrees Celsius regardless of weather conditions, which ensures durability and a constant level of performance.
500 electric kilometers per day
Thanks to the increase in battery capacity – without changing its dimensions – the CF Electric now has a range of more than 200 kilometers, which is twice that of previous generations. A full charge of the battery usually takes about 75 minutes when using a 250 kW charging station.
Recharging the batteries during loading and unloading operations or during a driver’s break allows the DAF CF Electric to travel up to 500 kilometers per day entirely due to the electric drive. This is very beneficial in terms of performance and efficiency of the car.
Special recommendations for purchase and use
The use of electric cars requires a special approach from the client. That is why DAF offers to help its customers improved models of route planning with the help of which it is possible to develop the most efficient scheme of vehicle operation, including useful tips on intelligently planning the battery charging schedule. DAF also offers consultations – with the participation of equipment suppliers, including VDL – on optimal organization of charging station infrastructure.
Sales in September
CF Electric vehicles with extended range will go on sale in Europe in September. The start of deliveries is planned for the first months of 2021.
