DAF Trucks has introduced its new CF Electric 6×2 cargo vehicle. The first such vehicles will be tested in operational modelater this year as garbage trucks for the Dutch state-owned waste disposal companies HVC and ROVA. In early 2020, the city of Rotterdam and Cure will follow suit and deploy fully electric 6×2 garbage trucks equipped with a loader crane. All these vehicles are equipped with the VDL E-Power drive. The fully electric superstructure is powered by a VDL Trans-lift.
Since the end of 2018, various Dutch transport companies, including Pieter Apel, Simon Loos and Tini Manders, as well as the Jumbo supermarket chain, have been operating the first DAF CF Electrics 4×2 tractors. These trucks are part of an extensive trial in which they must transport goods to destinations such as supermarkets and distribution centers. German logistics firm Rhenus currently uses two CF Electrics for regional container transport. Thanks to its efficiency, versatility and practicality, the DAF CF Electric won the prestigious “Green Truck Award” in Germany earlier this year.
Increased maneuverability
Since CF Electric produces few air emissions and has a low noise level when in use, this truck is ideal not only for city distribution, but also for household waste collection. For this purpose, DAF designed a 3-axle rigid frame with a steering axle for increased maneuverability and even greater load capacity. The total weight of the CF Electric 6×2 is 28 tons.
Regular routes
The VDL E-power electric drive provides 210 kW of power and 2000 Nm of torque – just like the CF Electric tractor. The drive is powered by a battery with a (gross) energy capacity of 170 kWh; this is enough to cover regular garbage collection routes. Garbage trucks usually return to the depot every few hours to unload; currently, electric trucks can recharge up to 80% battery capacity in just 30 minutes.
Side loaders and loader cranes
HVC operates in North Holland, the districts of Rijnmond and Flevoland, while ROVA operates in the central and eastern regions of the Netherlands. Both companies use side loaders, which allow containers to be emptied from the side of the truck. The city of Rotterdam and Cure in the Eindhoven region will use a DAF CF Electric complete with a loader crane to collect waste from underground containers.
