The new generation DAF XD series for special transport and for regional transport was chosen as the best trucks of 2023. Harald Seidel, president of DAF Trucks, accepted the most prestigious award in the transport industry today at the award ceremony at the IAA Transportation in Hanover. The XD series was also officially launched this morning at the IAA, with a full range of electric models with a range of over 500 kilometres.
A jury of 24 editors and leading journalists of professional publications from various European countries awarded the new generation DAF XD the “International Truck of the Year 2023” award. Last year, the new generation DAF XF, XG and XG⁺ models for international and high-tonnage transportation also received the title “International Truck of the Year 2022”.
Contribution to the efficiency of road transport
According to the rules of the International Truck of the Year (IToY), the award is given every year to the car released in the previous year, which made the most significant contribution to improving the efficiency of road transport. The decision is made based on an assessment of several criteria, including technological innovation, comfort, safety, handling, fuel economy, environmental impact and total cost of ownership (TCO).
New generation standards
Summarizing the results of the jury’s voting, International Truck of the Year Chairman Gianenrico Griffini stated that “with the introduction of the new XD series, DAF has set a new standard in the class of trucks for regional transport. The vehicles of this series have significantly improved direct and indirect visibility and, therefore, increased safety, which is a key criterion for trucks in regional transport. In addition, the efficiency and comfort of the driver also reached a new level in its segment.”
Circular review
Griffini emphasized that the IToY jury praised the driver’s seating position and all-round visibility, which is provided by the large curved windshield and side glass with a low hood line and the optional curb area viewing glass. “These features, along with the cornering camera and optional digital vision system that replaces traditional mirrors, significantly increase the safety of vulnerable road users.”
Electric and diesel engines
In addition, the 24 members of the jury also appreciated the high efficiency of the new high-tech XD power lines with powerful PACCAR MX-11 engines with ZF TraXon automatic transmission and advanced prediction function. The announcement of the release of new electric power lines made a special impression on the jury.
