JUMBO TAKES DELIVERY OF FIRST DAF CF ELECTRIC

DAF Trucks has delivered its first fully electric truck to the Dutch supermarket chain Jumbo. The CF Electric model was developed as part of a joint project between DAF and VDL and will be used by Jumbo to supply supermarkets in the south of the Netherlands. DAF Trucks President Harry Walters and VDL Groep President and CEO Willem van der Legte handed over the keys to the first DAF CF Electric to Jumbo CEO Frits van Erd.

The commissioning of the first DAF CF Electric is an important step for DAF Trucks, VDL and Jumbo. The delivery of DAF’s all-electric commercial vehicle marks the start of a series of long-term road tests of electric and hybrid trucks.

Electric trucks for city streets

“The transport sector is facing a major transformation,” says Harry Walters. “Electric trucks are already ready to become the main means of urban freight transport. Not today, and not next year, but definitely in the near future. I am particularly proud that today we are starting a large-scale project to test electric trucks in real road conditions as part of DAF’s cooperation with VDL and Jumbo. The next step towards sustainable development

The current market situation puts Jumbo, DAF and VDL at the forefront of developing environmentally friendly transport that does not produce noise pollution. Our work is based on the fact that this approach will soon become the norm in the urban environment. The DAF CF Electric with E-Power technology from VDL offers cargo carriers an ideal solution that meets their requirements and tasks, and represents a significant step forward from the point of view of environmental safety of cargo transport and regional cargo transportation.

VDL and TNO evaluate the potential of “green” gas stations

DAF CF Electric is able to deliver within a radius of about 50 km with zero local emissions and minimal noise pollution. The truck charging station is located in the Jumbo distribution center in Wegel. V-Storage, a joint venture between VDL Groep and Scholt Energy Control, is working with a Dutch research institute, TNO, to study the possibility of installing solar panels to power the charging station.

DAF CF Electric

DAF CF Electric is a 4×2 tractor designed to transport loads weighing up to 37 tons on city roads, with single-axle or two-axle trailers as standard. The car is based on the DAF CF, the model that holds the title of “International Car of the Year 2018”, and has an electric drive based on VDL’s E-Power technology. The center of the intelligent power unit is a 210 kW electric motor with a lithium-ion battery with a total capacity of 170 kWh. CF Electric has a range of about 100 km, which makes it suitable for transporting large loads in urban conditions. The battery is equipped with a 30-minute quick charge function, and a full charge takes only 1.5 hours.
